A Taste of Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the everyday practice of strengthening awareness of our present-moment experience. One oft-cited definition of the word reads: “Mindfulness means paying attention on purpose to the present moment non-judgmentally.”
For many years, the practice of mindfulness meditation has been studied and scientifically examined with results that directly reduce everyday stress and increase overall happiness. Not only that, mindfulness is also a skill that brings awareness to patterns of behavior, making it easier to identify the signals of anxiety and depression even before they become problems. Notably, it is the eight-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program established in 1979 by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD., that has been the gold standard of mindfulness training and the basis of the scientific data that we have today.
But how exactly does mindfulness work? And how should one begin to practice the techniques in order to increase everyday wellbeing?
