Mushrooms have been valued for centuries in traditional wellness practices, but modern research now demonstrates exactly why fungi offer such broad health benefits. The fruiting body is the visible mushroom that is commonly recognized and eaten. However, the mycelium of the mushroom—the root-like network that grows beneath the surface and support’s the mushroom’s life cycle—is now understood to be especially important. The mycelium is biologically active and full of compounds that support immune function, digestive function, and overall vitality.

One of the most well-studied groups of compounds found in mushroom mycelium is beta-glucans, a type of polysaccharide that interacts with immune cells. Beta-glucans train the immune system to fight pathogens. Rather than temporarily “boosting” the immune system, they work to create a more resilient and responsive immune defense overall. This is an important distinction between mushroom mycelium and other immune-supporting compounds like elderberry and echinacea. Mushroom mycelium can be taken year round to create a resilient immune system whereas elderberry and echinacea are commonly only used during cold and flu season.

Mushroom mycelium may also support the gut-immune connection. A large portion of immune activity takes place in and around the digestive tract, where the gut microbiome constantly communicates with the immune system. Mushroom polysaccharides can act like prebiotic fibers, as they may help nourish beneficial gut bacteria. As these fibers are fermented, they contribute to the production of short-chain fatty acids—compounds that help support intestinal barrier health, immune signaling, and a more balanced gut environment.

Different mushroom species offer slightly different benefits. Reishi is often associated with longevity and stress adaptation. Lion’s Mane is best known for nervous system and cognitive support. Stamets 7 and MyCommunity by Host Defense are examples of multi-mushroom formulas designed for broader immune support. Host Defense describes Stamets 7 as a seven-mushroom blend for daily, foundational immune support, while MyCommunity is more comprehensive for stronger immune support. These products are available as capsules, powders and extracts, making them easy to incorporate into a daily routine.

Several other mushrooms are commonly used for immune, digestive and whole-body wellness support. Turkey Tail is known to support beneficial microflora in the gut microbiome. Chaga is rich in antioxidant compounds and is often used for overall cellular protection. Cordyceps is traditionally used for energy, stamina and respiratory support; a popular option for people looking to support energy levels and physical performance. Maitake supports healthy blood sugar levels already within a normal range. Each mushroom offers unique benefits while still sharing common themes: immune communication, antioxidant support, energy support and microbiome resiliency.

For those that prefer a simple routine, capsules are an easy and convenient option. Powders offer more flexibility and can be mixed into smoothies, coffee, tea or other functional beverages. Host Defense also offers liquid extracts, providing another way to incorporate mushroom support into daily wellness routines. These options are available at Johnson Compounding & Wellness and can be selected based on individual goals, such as immune resilience during seasonal changes, digestive support, greater energy, reducing stress or cognitive wellness.
