Tech Neck Isn’t Just an Adult Problem

Children are spending more time than ever on digital devices—and it’s showing in their posture, according to Dr. Victoria E. Malchar, DC, CCSP, ABAAHP, owner of Malchar Chiropractic and Wellness Center, in Warwick, Rhode Island. “Tech neck”, a condition caused by prolonged screen use that leads to stiffness, tension and spinal misalignment, is now being increasingly seen in young patients at her office.
Tech neck, also known as forward head posture, results from spending hours with the head tilted downward while using phones, tablets or laptops. Studies show that children and teens average five to seven hours per day on these devices. One study found that 69 percent of children report text neck pain, and 100 percent of young participants displayed strong neck flexion of at least 45 degrees during daily activities.
Malchar stresses that, because kids’ spines are still developing, long-term poor posture can lead to chronic issues including nerve interference, headaches and reduced mobility. Neck pain has become the eighth-leading cause of disability among individuals ages 15 to 19. “Chiropractic care is increasingly recommended as a proactive solution,” notes Malchar. “Gentle adjustments may improve posture, relieve muscle tension, support healthy spinal development and even enhance sleep and focus in school-aged children.”
Parents are advised to monitor screen time, encourage regular breaks and seek chiropractic care if their child complains of frequent neck or shoulder pain. “Early intervention can help reverse harmful patterns and support long-term wellness,” Malchar adds.
