The gut may be best known for digesting food, but its influence extends beyond digestion. The gut microbiome, made up of trillions of microorganisms, plays an important role in digestion and interacts closely with the immune system. Research also suggests connections between the gut microbiome, metabolism and other aspects of overall health.
A healthy gut microbiome includes a diverse community of microorganisms. Diet, stress, sleep and certain medications can influence the composition and function of the microbiome. Research continues to explore how changes in the gut microbiome may be associated with inflammation and other health conditions.
Supporting gut health can begin with simple habits:
• Eat a variety of colorful produce to provide dietary fiber that nourishes beneficial gut bacteria.
• Include fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kefir or kimchi. They can contain live microorganisms and may support gut microbiome diversity.
• Manage stress with practices such as meditation, deep breathing or gentle movement. Stress can affect digestive function and the gut environment.
• Stay hydrated to support normal digestion and other bodily functions.
Research published in Cell found that a diet high in fermented foods increased microbiome diversity and reduced certain markers of inflammation in healthy adults. On the other hand, imbalances caused by processed foods, chronic stress, disrupted sleep or specific medications appear to trigger widespread symptoms, from brain fog to joint pain.
By treating the gut as a command center and prioritizing its care, individuals can influence overall health in powerful, lasting ways.
